醫學(xué)史上的偉大先驅們——3.亞歷山大·弗萊明（Alexander Fleming）

隨著(zhù)時(shí)代的發(fā)展和科技的進(jìn)步，人類(lèi)的平均壽命穩步增高。探究其中原因，社會(huì )的安定、物質(zhì)條件的提升等因素自然非常關(guān)鍵，但醫學(xué)水平的突飛猛進(jìn)同樣重要。

在以往，任何外傷都是非常危險甚至致命的。稍有不慎，一道小口子就可能導致嚴重的全身感染乃至休克。日本戰國時(shí)期德川家的猛將本多平八郎忠勝，一生馳騁沙場(chǎng)，從未負傷。卻在晚年雕刻佛像時(shí)不小心割破了手指，最終因為感染而死亡。不得不說(shuō)是相當諷刺了。其隱藏著(zhù)的真兇，就是看不見(jiàn)摸不著(zhù)的各種細菌。

起初，人們被細菌感染以后，只能依靠自身免疫力硬扛，因為沒(méi)什么特效藥。這一過(guò)程可謂九死一生。然而，一切隨著(zhù)一個(gè)人的發(fā)現而悄然改變。他就是青霉素的發(fā)現者，英國人亞歷山大·弗萊明爵士（Sir Alexander Fleming）。自此，抗生素的篇章被開(kāi)啟了。

不得不說(shuō)，弗萊明是幸運的。因為他并不是第一個(gè)發(fā)現青霉菌能殺滅細菌的人。1871年，約瑟夫·李斯特（Joseph Lister）就發(fā)現青霉菌有抵抗細菌感染的作用。因為在他們當地，有用發(fā)霉的面包涂抹創(chuàng )口的傳統?？蛇@位首創(chuàng )外科消毒法的醫生卻沒(méi)有沿著(zhù)這個(gè)研究方向繼續深入下去。

直到1928年，度假歸來(lái)的弗萊明再一次進(jìn)入實(shí)驗室，準備處理那些含有葡萄球菌菌落的培養皿時(shí)，卻有了意外發(fā)現，其中一個(gè)培養皿上長(cháng)出了霉菌。弗萊明通過(guò)顯微鏡觀(guān)察，發(fā)現霉菌周?chē)紱](méi)有細菌存在。也就是說(shuō)，這團霉菌在自身周?chē)纬闪艘粋€(gè)無(wú)菌圈。

弗萊明是戰地軍醫出生，對尋找避免士兵死于感染的可能性相當敏感。他立刻順著(zhù)這條線(xiàn)索繼續研究，結果驚喜地發(fā)現，即使將霉菌稀釋800倍，霉菌培養物也能阻止葡萄球菌的生長(cháng)。最終，他將該活性物質(zhì)命名為青霉素。

當然，早期的青霉素非常不穩定，提純也特別困難，不能大規模量產(chǎn)。此外，當時(shí)的學(xué)術(shù)環(huán)境，對青霉素的接受認可程度平平，質(zhì)疑聲不斷。這也是所有新事物發(fā)展的必經(jīng)之路。但弗萊明和其他支持他的同僚并沒(méi)有放棄，一直為青霉素的進(jìn)一步純化和穩定而努力著(zhù)。其中，牛津大學(xué)給弗萊明的助力最大。最終，在美國強大的工業(yè)化體系的支撐下，青霉素終于實(shí)現了量產(chǎn)。人類(lèi)世界從此發(fā)生了天翻地覆的劇變。

然而，弗萊明的成就遠不止于此。他首次提出戰場(chǎng)使用防腐劑為士兵的傷口消毒不但沒(méi)有作用，反而會(huì )導致情況惡化。他還發(fā)現了溶菌酶，并設計了對人體血液和其他體液的敏感性滴定方法和測定。但這些在青霉素的橫空出世面前，都黯然失色。

曾經(jīng)看到過(guò)一個(gè)說(shuō)法，抗生素的橫空出世，以一己之力將人類(lèi)的平均壽命提升了十年。雖然不清楚該數據的來(lái)源和可靠性，可至少我們再也不需要過(guò)一點(diǎn)小創(chuàng )口就擔驚受怕的日子了。
