un-是本族語(yǔ)前綴,而in-是拉丁語(yǔ)前綴。在許多詞典里,un-的派生詞多半是只列具有特殊意義的詞,對于一般派生意義很容易推測的,就沒(méi)有必要把所有派生詞羅列出來(lái)。相反in-的派生詞則是全部羅列出來(lái),這對初學(xué)英語(yǔ)的人在查詞典時(shí)容易掌握和作為用法上的參考。un-這個(gè)現代英語(yǔ)的中活用前綴,既可以用來(lái)相外來(lái)和處來(lái)語(yǔ)詞根結合,也可以和本族語(yǔ)詞根結合,構成新的派生詞,從詞義上說(shuō),un-不僅僅是表示否定意義的,并且還帶有明顯的褒貶的意思。如unkind(不厚道,不親切)unworthy(不值得)等。因此,對已經(jīng)有貶義的詞前面,是不用un-這個(gè)否定前綴的.例如,一般是不用un- foolish, unugly, unbad, unevil等。嚴格說(shuō)來(lái),前綴un-加在動(dòng)詞前面和加在形容詞前面;在詞源上作為詞義有區別的兩個(gè)前綴。從英語(yǔ)時(shí)歷史來(lái)看;從十七世紀以后,由于大量吸收拉丁語(yǔ)詞匯(主要通過(guò)法語(yǔ)),滲入了許多帶前綴in-的詞匯,因而造成了詞匯上一定程度的混亂。這樣一來(lái),許多同詞根而異前綴詞義相同的詞,逐漸多了起來(lái),所以在用法的分辨感到有些困難。不僅如此,in-與un-混用以后,英語(yǔ)詞匯出現了大量否定對似語(yǔ)(negative doublets)例如:

unedible (不適于食用的,不可以吃的),inedible(不適合食用的,不可以食用的);unapt(不配的,不適當的),inapt(不適當的),unmeasurable(不能測量的),immeasurable(不能測量的),unreligious(無(wú)信仰的),irreligious(無(wú)信仰的)unsanitary(不衛生的),insanitary(不衛生的)等。(disease unease; disinterested uninterested; dislike unlike; disable unable;)

從這些否定對似語(yǔ)來(lái)看,它們在詞義上是有細微差別的,但作為同義詞不達意來(lái)說(shuō)是比較恰當的。這種現象對于分辨對似語(yǔ)之間詞義上的細微差別是不容易的。不過(guò)像這樣的對似語(yǔ)現在雖然已為數不多了,但使用時(shí)還是要加以注意。

再者,un-與in-的含義和用法相近似。un-一般是和本族語(yǔ)詞干或本族語(yǔ)里已采納的外來(lái)語(yǔ)詞干相結合,而in-一般是和拉丁語(yǔ)詞干相結合。比較:

unable(不可能的)---- inability(不可能的)

unjust ----injustice

unlucky ----ill-luck in an unlucky hour,偏偏,偏巧

unceasing----incessant(不斷的)

unexplained(不能解釋的)---- inexplicable (不可解釋的)

ungrateful(忘恩負義的)---- ingratitude(忘因負義)

有時(shí),為了區別詞義,往往分別用un-和in-。例如:

unexpressive (=inexpressive) (辭不達意),inexpressible (不可言傳); unpractical (=impractical) (不切實(shí)際), impracticable (行不通)。

另外un-和in-在構詞上不有以下區別:

(1)in-或im-開(kāi)頭的單詞,不再加in-,而用un-,如unimaginable(不可想象的)unimproved(未改進(jìn)的)但inimitable(不可摹仿的)例外。

(2)詞尾是拉丁語(yǔ)后綴-ate,-ent,-ant,-ite,-ible的單詞,多半用-in.

independent(不依賴(lài)的) inconsistent(不一致的)

indefinite(不確定的) impolite(不禮貌)

(3)詞尾是本族語(yǔ)后綴-able,-ed,-ful,-ing,-like,-ory,-some 的單詞,多半用un-。

unceasing(不斷的) unbending(不彎曲的)

unsuccessful(不成功的) unfruitful(無(wú)結果的)

另外在同根詞中un-和其他表示“否定”意義的前綴在詞類(lèi)或詞義上也有區別。比較:
