公元9世紀至公元11世紀，一大批斯堪的納維亞人（Scandinavian，主要指今天的丹麥、挪威、瑞典、芬蘭和冰島等地）離開(kāi)故土前往他們從未去過(guò)的地方尋找財富，這些擅長(cháng)航海的武士被史書(shū)稱(chēng)作維京人（Vikings）或者北方人（Norsemen）。其中一部分維京人乘坐當時(shí)極為先進(jìn)的新型「無(wú)畏艦」跨越大西洋抵達不列顛群島，對沿海地區進(jìn)行劫掠——特別是沒(méi)有任何還手之力的修道院。還有一部分維京人則把觸手伸到了歐洲大陸的腹地，甚至當代俄羅斯的一部分地區、冰島、格陵蘭島和紐芬蘭島。在接下來(lái)的三個(gè)世紀里，他們因為自己的行為被標上了各種稱(chēng)號：海盜、劫掠者、商人、移民。 該劇描述了維京人鼎盛時(shí)期的故事，他們在當時(shí)的北歐地區處于統治地位，因為喜好海上劫掠并不斷對外擴張，被人們冠以“北歐海盜”的別號。該劇將側重于描寫(xiě)維京人的生活、貿易、探索及對外侵襲的全過(guò)程。
