守赍的規則是嚴格的，除了因為健康的理由，她們幾乎終年都守赍。每日只準許吃一笑，而且是在下午三時(shí)以后。食物包括面包和蔬菜，進(jìn)食前后都須念適當的經(jīng)文。至于慈善工作，教會(huì )鼓勵她們體驗窮人的生活，探訪(fǎng)病人，并按她們的實(shí)際生活狀況而從事慈善的工作。

西方都曾有過(guò)一個(gè)時(shí)期實(shí)行守貞人士過(guò)共同生活。神職界或守獨身的男人住在貞女家里，以便保證她們或為她們提供靈修方面的服務(wù)。這種情況無(wú)可避免會(huì )導致濫用和遭受主教及傳道人誹議。例如基索東圣若望、圣耶羅和偽克萊孟(三世紀中葉出版的Ad Virgines的作者)等人尖銳的批評。最后，教會(huì )訂立法令，保衛已受祝圣的貞女的德行，保證她們能忠于她們對天主的委身。這些法令對于發(fā)展受祝圣的貞女真正的隱修團體，和教會(huì )承認修道生活是一種特出的生活力式，有很大的頁(yè)獻。

隱修士和獨修士并不是做了些什么了不起的大事，他們只是努力完整地維持初期基督徒的生活?；鳀|圣若望(407年卒)肯定隱修院的必要性，因為世界不是屬于基督徒的，等它歸依基督信仰后，脫離世界而退隱的需要才會(huì )消失。
