The Tower of London is a complex located on the Thames River in London. The White Tower, the square building with turrets on each corner that gave it its name, is actually in the middle of a complex of several buildings, which have served as fortress, armoury, treasury, mint, palace, place of execution, public records office, observatory, refuge, and prison, particularly for "upper class" prisoners.

In 1078 William the Conqueror ordered the White Tower to be built there, as much to protect the Normans from the people of the City of London as to protect London from anyone else. It was King Richard the Lionheart who had the moat dug around the surrounding wall and filled with water from the Thames.

A Royal Menagerie was established at the Tower in the 13th century, In 1264 it was moved to the Bulwark, which was duly renamed the Lion Tower, near the main western entrance. It was opened as an occasional public spectacle in the reign of Elizabeth I. By 1804 the menagerie was regularly open to the public.

The military use of the Tower as a fortification, like that of other such castles, became obsolete with the introduction of artillery.

In the early 1080s, William the Conqueror began to build a massive stone tower at the centre of his London fortress. As a royal palace, fortress, prison, place of torture and execution, armoury, Royal Mint, royal zoo and jewel house, the Tower of London has witnessed many great events in British history.

The Tower is perhaps most well known today for housing the greatest working collection of Crown Jewels in the world. The Crown Jewels, associated for centuries with the coronation of English Kings and Queens, can be seen today in the newly represented Jewel House.

What’s more, with iconic architecture, world-famous Beefeaters, the ravens, spectacular royal armour and plenty of exhibitions and activities, it provides an unmissable day out for everyone.

The history of the Tower starts with William the Conqueror (1066-1087) and, although it’s not known precisely when building work finished, the first phase was certainly underway in the 1070s.

As a powerbase in peacetime and refuge in times of crisis, the Tower’s fortifications were updated and expanded by medieval kings. A series of separate building campaigns ensured that by about 1350, the Tower was transformed into the formidable fortress we see today.

Henry VIII (1509-47) continued the work begun on the royal residential buildings by his father Henry VII (1485-1509) and, during the English Civil War (1642-1649), the Tower was one of Charles I’s (1625-1649) most important assets.
