朱鹮是稀世珍禽，過(guò)去在中國東部、日本、俄羅斯、朝鮮等地曾有較廣泛的分布，由于環(huán)境惡化等因素導致種群數量急劇下降，至本世紀70年代野外已無(wú)蹤影。

春季是朱鹮的繁殖季節，這時(shí)成年的雄鳥(niǎo)和雌鳥(niǎo)結成配偶，離開(kāi)越冬時(shí)組成的群體，分散在栓皮櫟樹(shù)等高大的喬木樹(shù)上去筑巢、產(chǎn)卵。這時(shí)它會(huì )用嘴不斷地啄取從頸部的肌肉中分泌出來(lái)的一種灰色的色素，涂抹到羽毛上，使它的頭部、頸部、上背和兩翅等都變成灰黑色。它的巢很像一個(gè)圓盤(pán)，十分簡(jiǎn)陋，外徑73厘米，內徑53厘米，深8厘米，距地面高度為5—20米。巢由樹(shù)枝架成，里面墊以玉米桿、蕨類(lèi)、細藤條、草葉及草根等，有時(shí)也利用舊巢。每窩產(chǎn)卵2—4枚，卵的大小約為65×45毫米，卵重70克左右，表面是藍灰色或淺綠色的，上面帶有黑褐色的斑點(diǎn)。雄鳥(niǎo)和雌鳥(niǎo)輪流孵卵，孵化期大約需要28天。親鳥(niǎo)在孵卵期間經(jīng)常翻卵、晾卵、理巢等，孵卵時(shí)縮曲著(zhù)頸部或將頭部盤(pán)起來(lái)，有時(shí)站立起來(lái)舒展翅膀，或者抖動(dòng)身體。但巢中往往只有一只親鳥(niǎo)，不孵卵的另一只親鳥(niǎo)并不在巢邊護巢，夜間則到其他樹(shù)上去棲息。雛鳥(niǎo)為晚成性，剛孵出時(shí)上體被有淡灰色的絨羽，下體被有白色絨羽，腳為橙紅色。出殼后由親鳥(niǎo)輪流將口中半消化的食物吐出喂養，性急的雛鳥(niǎo)們則爭著(zhù)把長(cháng)喙伸進(jìn)親鳥(niǎo)的嘴里，親鳥(niǎo)則使勁抖動(dòng)著(zhù)脖子，使食物盡快地吐出來(lái)。親鳥(niǎo)在育雛的前期每天返回巢中的次數為7—9次，隨著(zhù)雛鳥(niǎo)的迅速生長(cháng)和對食物需求的增加，后期則增加到每天14—15次。喂完食物后還要幫助雛鳥(niǎo)清理糞便，方法是叼走巢底的樹(shù)枝，使糞便漏到下面去，或者把沾有糞便的碎鋪墊物叼到巢的外邊，然后再叼來(lái)新的巢材和鋪墊物來(lái)補充。雛鳥(niǎo)在親鳥(niǎo)的精心哺育下生長(cháng)很快，60天后就能跟隨親鳥(niǎo)自由飛翔了。性成熟的年齡為3歲左右，壽命最長(cháng)的記錄為17年。
