調制解調器是一種計算機硬件，它能把計算機的數字信號翻譯成可沿普通**線(xiàn)傳送的模擬信號，而這些模擬信號又可被線(xiàn)路另一端的另一個(gè)調制解調器接收，并譯成計算機可懂的語(yǔ)言。這一簡(jiǎn)單過(guò)程完成了兩臺計算機間的通信。

兩臺計算機之間利用電話(huà)線(xiàn)路傳送數據信號時(shí)，必須的設備是什么？

Modem即調制解調器。 調制解調就是我們常說(shuō)的Modem，其實(shí)是Modulator（調制器）與Demodulator（解調器）的簡(jiǎn)稱(chēng)，中文稱(chēng)為調制解調器。計算機內的信息是由“0”和“1”組成數字信號，而在電話(huà)線(xiàn)上傳遞的卻只能是模擬電信號（模擬信號為連續的，數字信號為間斷的）。

于是，當兩臺計算機要通過(guò)電話(huà)線(xiàn)進(jìn)行數據傳輸時(shí)，就需要一個(gè)設備負責數模的轉換。這個(gè)數模轉換器就是我們這里要討論的Modem。計算機在發(fā)送數據時(shí)，先由Modem把數字信號轉換為相應的模擬信號，這個(gè)過(guò)程稱(chēng)為“調制”，也成D/A轉換。

經(jīng)過(guò)調制的信號通過(guò)電話(huà)載波傳送到另一臺計算機之前，也要經(jīng)由接收方的Modem負責把模擬信號還原為計算機能識別的數字信號，這個(gè)過(guò)程我們稱(chēng)“解調”，也稱(chēng)A/D轉換。
