Where there's a will, there's a way.
再比如: 隔墻有耳。Walls have ears.
再比如: 百聞不如一見(jiàn)。Seeing is believing.
二,部分對等。即翻譯成英語(yǔ)后,可以看到漢語(yǔ)表達方式的影子,反之亦然,如:
亂七八糟 at sixes and sevens
三心二意 in two minds/ half hearted
三,完全不對等。這種翻譯最難,因為在兩個(gè)語(yǔ)言當中沒(méi)有任何類(lèi)似的地方,因此翻譯出來(lái)時(shí)候就必須解釋?zhuān)袝r(shí)候可能還要講故事。
比如: 負荊請罪offer a humble apology 字面上的意思是謙虛的道歉。但是這樣翻譯就完全失去了“負荊請罪”這個(gè)這個(gè)成語(yǔ)所包括的文化與歷史內涵。
再比如,走馬觀(guān)花 give a hurried and cursory glance at,skin the surface 這樣翻譯外國人當然可以理解,但是和“負荊請罪”一樣,原文的味道沒(méi)有了。
1. cast pearls before swine;(直譯:給豬撒珍珠)
2. preach to deaf ears;(直譯:對著(zhù)聾子的耳朵說(shuō)教)
3. talk to a post;(直譯:對著(zhù)門(mén)柱子說(shuō)話(huà))
但是,以上都只能算是“idiom”,《韋氏大學(xué)詞典》的解釋是,an expression in the usage of a language that is peculiar to itself either grammatically (as no, it wasn't me) or in having a meaning that cannot be derived from the conjoined meanings of its elements,所以這個(gè)解釋?xiě)摳咏跐h語(yǔ)的“習語(yǔ)”??
Spare the rod, spoil the kids,我們只要知道大致是玉不琢不成器,或三天不挨打上房去揭瓦,或棍棒出孝子一類(lèi)意思即可——畢竟我們還沒(méi)強大到讓外國人用我們的成語(yǔ)說(shuō)話(huà)。
