商人亞美利哥（Amerigo）于1451年生于佛羅倫薩?？斓剿氖畾q的那年，亞美利哥在西班牙獲得了正準備前往“新大陸”的奧杰達將軍的賞識。1497年，亞美利哥的身影出現在帆船上。亞美利哥因此出名。當時(shí)“新大陸”還沒(méi)有一個(gè)總括大陸的名稱(chēng)。德國地理學(xué)家馬丁倡議稱(chēng)這塊大陸為亞美利加，這個(gè)地名就此定了下來(lái)。該地名是將亞美利哥的拉丁語(yǔ)名亞美利克斯(Americus)的詞尾換為地名接尾詞-a而成的。
