德語(yǔ)是少數使用復合詞很普遍的語(yǔ)言之一 ， 由多個(gè)單詞組成的單詞（如schadenfreude，幸災樂(lè )禍），由schaden（傷害）和freude（樂(lè )趣）合成。復合詞往往不能直接被翻譯成其他語(yǔ)言，所以用復合詞寫(xiě)出的笑話(huà)對于非德語(yǔ)人士來(lái)說(shuō)不會(huì )那么有趣。

麥克利蘭德教授以一個(gè)常見(jiàn)的笑話(huà)為例，向我解釋?zhuān)?/p>

"如果你的手表掉了，為什么不能把它拾起來(lái)？因為沒(méi)有Urheberrecht。"

她解釋道，Urheberrecht意思是"版權"，但德國人有另一個(gè)非常類(lèi)似的發(fā)音復合詞——Uhreberrecht——字面意義是"手表拾取權"。當大聲說(shuō)的時(shí)候，這一雙重含義會(huì )導致滑稽的效果。

這個(gè)笑話(huà)如果用英文表達是不是一點(diǎn)也不搞笑了？事實(shí)上，德語(yǔ)的這種非常簡(jiǎn)明扼要的特性，或許解釋了為什么即使是一名英語(yǔ)講得很好的德國人，他的英語(yǔ)聽(tīng)起來(lái)可能也會(huì )讓人感覺(jué)有些過(guò)于精確——這會(huì )增加德國人更加認真而非更加有趣的感覺(jué)。

來(lái)自紐倫堡（Nuremberg）的律師克里斯蒂安·鮑曼（Christian Baumann）在旅行中接觸到了世界各地不同的文化，對于語(yǔ)言差異在很大程度上造成德國人無(wú)趣的刻板印象這一觀(guān)點(diǎn)，他表示認同。

在他第一次出國旅行游歷美國的過(guò)程中，他一直要將自己的想法從德語(yǔ)翻譯成英語(yǔ)，即便是在說(shuō)笑話(huà)。結果人們根本不理解他。有人甚至指責他的直言不諱是一種粗魯。

"我認為，當你嘗試按照德文字面意思翻譯成英文時(shí)，你會(huì )丟掉一則笑話(huà)中很多有趣的東西。當你必須解釋一則笑話(huà)的時(shí)候，此刻就沒(méi)那么有意思了，"鮑曼說(shuō)。"由此，他們自然也就不認為我很有趣了。"

"在英語(yǔ)中，你總是彬彬有禮，即使你在批評某事。但德語(yǔ)則不同。我們會(huì )說(shuō)出我們的想法，因此，我自然認為，英語(yǔ)人士的印象是，德國人邏輯性強，粗魯，僅此而已（但他們是非常好的工程師），他們了無(wú)生趣，" 鮑曼說(shuō)。

德國喜劇演員克里斯蒂安·舒爾特-勞（Christian Schulte-Loh）對此也有同感。他完全意識到德國人的刻板印象，他在他的新書(shū)"ZumLachen auf die Insel（《帶著(zhù)笑話(huà)來(lái)到英格蘭》）"中寫(xiě)道，德國人過(guò)于誠實(shí)但不夠禮貌，英國人則過(guò)于溫文爾雅而不夠坦誠。
