但大部分參觀(guān)者并沒(méi)有意識到“隔都”這個(gè)詞源自對英文ghetto的音譯，而追溯詞源，則與威尼斯水城息息相關(guān)。肖·巴茨教授介紹，其實(shí)，隔都（ghetto）這一詞匯的出現，源于500年前威尼斯頒發(fā)的一個(gè)法令。原來(lái)，早在11世紀初，意大利威尼斯就有猶太人居住。

漸漸的，猶太人在威尼斯形成了一個(gè)數量可觀(guān)的團體。但是出于種種原因，威尼斯于1516年3月29日頒布法令，規定猶太人必須居住在城里的限定區域，并對他們可以從事的行業(yè)、出入居住區時(shí)間等進(jìn)行了規定。
