據說(shuō)當時(shí)在匹茲堡擔任倉庫點(diǎn)收員的福斯特，發(fā)起并組織了一個(gè)業(yè)余男聲五重唱團。其中有位團員的妻子叫蘇珊·肯脫萊脫，相貌十分美麗動(dòng)人，除了一頭金色的卷發(fā)外，她爽朗、活潑、直率的性格也非常惹人喜愛(ài)。作者福斯特正是以此為靈感，創(chuàng )作出本曲的。歌中表達了主人公對蘇珊娜的刻骨銘心的愛(ài)。為了這份愛(ài)他可以獻出自己年輕的生命，為了愛(ài)人黃土埋身也心甘情愿。他遠離家鄉，四處尋找心上人，冒著(zhù)酷暑頂著(zhù)烈日心卻像冰一樣的冷，但此心不變。
