2、Yangyi Geothermal Field in Damxung County()

Yangyi geothermal field is located 72 km northwest of the Lhasa City,55 km southwest to the Yangbajain geothermal field,50 km from the Nyemo County town,accessible by highways.The altitude ranges 4550-5050 m.

The field lies on the south end of the Yangbajain-Yangyi basin,being a component of the Damxung-Yangbajain-Doqen Co active tectonic belt.The formation and distribution of the field are obviously controlled by the sublati-tudinal and the NE-and NW-trending faults.In the central part of the field there formed the Miocene horst of volcanic rocks,on the east and west sides there is a fault basin overlain by Quaternary argillaceous sandy gravels with a maximum thickness exceeding 600 m on the east side.The cover of the heat reservoir is composed by Himalayan trachyte,volcanic clastics and tuff;under-lain by granite porphyry and granite.High-temperature heat flow exists main-ly in the fractures of granite porphyry and granite,indicating a bedrock-frac-ture type heat reservoir.In plan the Yangyi geothermal field is oval in shape,4 km long from north to south,covering an area of about 1 1 square kilome-ters·The temperature decreases gradually from the center to the periphery.The high-temperature central part has the temperature exceeding 150℃.It covers an area of 1.6 square kilometers,being the major area with rising fluid and also the principal part of the reservoir.The maximum temperature of the reservoir obtained is 207℃.The total amount of steam and water of a single borehole is greater than 100 t/h,the maximum being 381 t/h.The maximum power generation potential of a single hole reaches 10 MWe.Surrounding the high-temperature area lies the medium-temperature geothermal resources area with temperature ranging 90-150℃,covering an area of 5.9 square kilome-ters·The entire field has a relative closing pressure of flowing well ranging 2.8-9.4 kg/cm2,the relative working pressure 0.95-11.3 kg/cm2,the total amount of steam and water of a single well 19-381 t/h,the dryness 13%-26.9%,the inferred accumulative heat at the depth of 2000 m 9.14×1014 kcal,the recoverable heat 5.86×1013 kcal,and the total amount of steam and water exploitable under present conditions 1045 t/h(200℃);all these demon-strate that the field can satisfy the demands for a 30 MWe geothermal power station with prospective installed capacity of 50 MWe.

There are various kinds of geothermal manifestations in the Yangyi field focused in three NE-trending gullies.Regular geological investigations com-menced in the 1 970s.

In 1974-1975 the Geothermal Group of the Qinghai-Tibet Comprehensive Expedition Team under the CAS observed the hydrothermal activities in the area,and by hydrochemical analysis calculated the natural heat flow to be 2.6×104 kcal/sec.In 1977-1980 Kang Wenhua and others with the Institute of Geomechanics of the CAGS investigated the geological structures and conclud-ed that the heat indications in Yangyi were controlled jointly by the E-W trending Gongbo'gyamda-Yangbajain fracture in combination with the N-S trending Baingoin-Kangmar fracture.From 1981 to 1984 Liu Lianjie and oth-ers with the Geothermal Geological Party of Tibet made a 1∶100000 geother-mal reconnaissance survey and suggested that the hydrothermal activities wereunder the control of basement fractures.

In 1984-1985 Lei Zixiao,Jing Baofu and others with the Geophysical Prospecting Party of the TBG performed 1∶50000 integrated gravitational,magnetic and electric prospecting there.The area outlined by contours with minimum resistivity less than 10 ohm-m amounted to 4.8 square kilometers,generally identical to the medium-temperature geothermal area,and that out-lined by 15 ohm-m contours was 10.1 square kilometers,roughly identical to the area with temperature exceeding 25℃.

In 1985-1987 detailed survey was conducted in the Yangyi geothermal field by the Geothermal Geological Party of Tibet.The party drilled the first geothermal borehole in June 1985,and evaluated the geothermal resources mainly by drilling.Altogether 19 exploration boreholes were drilled covering a footage of 8087 m,the deepest being 825.5 m;besides,another 13 holes were drilled for temperature-measuring.Also performed were geophysical logging and heat reservoir engineering testing.During this period,the Institute of Geophysical and Geochemical Prospecting with the MGMR carried out soil sur-veys on Hg,As,Sb and Bi;Zhu Meixiang with the Geothermal Office of the Peking University and Li Jiazheng with the China University of Geosciences studied respectively the hydrothermal alteration and the volcanic rocks of the area with favorable results.

In 1 988-1 990 the Geothermal Geological Party explored the field and a to-tal of 1 5 boreholes were drilled at a footage of 11831 m,the deepest being 1149.44 m.In October 1989 when operating the No.208 hole,they obtained a 207℃ heat flow.All boreholes were examined by geophysical logging in coor-dination with heat reservoir engineering testing.In cooperation with Lu Ren and others of the Tianjin Geothermal Prospecting and Exploitation Design In-stitute the party conducted modeling calculation of the heat reservoir and pre-dicted the potential of the field.In 1991 Liang Tingli and others prepared and submitted the“Report on exploration of the Yangyi Geothermal Field”which was examined and approved in December the same year by the State Committee of Mineral Reserves.

Yangyi is so far the highest-temperature geothermal field in China.It is of basement fracture type and has been explored with great difficulty.The Geothermal Geological Party of Tibet and the Geophysical Prospecting Party of the TBG,hand-in-hand with the related research institutions of inland Chi-na,accomplished the prospecting,detailed prospecting and exploration over a period of ten years,and provided the State with an exploitable and utilizable medium-size geothermal field.The heat flow is characterized with high tem-perature,high pressure,large flow amount,and less encrustation,exhibiting a favorable future for the development of the Yangyi geothermal field.
