這道考題比較貼近考生的實(shí)際生活，要求考生講的無(wú)非是他們的一些心里話(huà)，因而不管是新生也好，老生也好，考試時(shí)面對這道問(wèn)題"卡殼"的現象并不多。然而，就回答的質(zhì)量而言，卻還有不少地方有待于理高，相對于基本信息的表達而言，他們對于非基本信息，如情感等的表達，還顯得頗有欠缺。絕大多數的考生在考試中顯得較為拘謹，其對于節奏、語(yǔ)調、語(yǔ)流等的把握也較欠火候。由于這是英語(yǔ)專(zhuān)業(yè)和口語(yǔ)考試，要求自然不同于非英語(yǔ)專(zhuān)業(yè)口頭表達的要求。換言之，如果說(shuō)我們對于非英語(yǔ)專(zhuān)業(yè)學(xué)生的要求是"交流"（communication），即把話(huà)說(shuō)清楚，那么對于英語(yǔ)專(zhuān)業(yè)的學(xué)生來(lái)說(shuō)，這個(gè)要求還遠遠不夠，他們應在"交流"的基礎上盡可能地把話(huà)說(shuō)得地道些、流暢些，所表達的思想內容應帶有自己的特點(diǎn)，同時(shí)在語(yǔ)言開(kāi)工上也應具有英語(yǔ)表達的特點(diǎn)。其實(shí)，所謂內容的個(gè)人特點(diǎn)人皆有之，只不過(guò)是并非人人皆知如何確切地表達而已。英語(yǔ)專(zhuān)業(yè)和學(xué)生若對此一無(wú)所知，那么你的專(zhuān)業(yè)特點(diǎn)如何得以體現呢？

現在，筆者將考試中采集到的一些出現頻率很高的觀(guān)點(diǎn)用英語(yǔ)表達出來(lái)，供讀者參考。

先說(shuō)開(kāi)頭：

考生中幾乎沒(méi)有人對自學(xué)發(fā)生任何抱怨，或表示不喜歡。其實(shí)也是，來(lái)者都是樂(lè )此不疲者，要不，他們?yōu)楹渭绕屏速M、又花了時(shí)間，趕到考場(chǎng)來(lái)找罪受呢？所以，其開(kāi)頭所表達的意思多半是正面的。不達，即使是表示喜歡，也不能總是用一句"yes, I do"了事，比如，我們可以緊接其后頂上一句：

Yes, I like this self - taught program.

Yes, I do. This program is very helpful to me.

I've found this program to be beneficial.

I feel that is program has many advantages.

類(lèi)似這樣的回答還能羅列出許多，但筆者在這里只圖點(diǎn)到為止，希望讀者對這種看似簡(jiǎn)單的句子給予重視。學(xué)口語(yǔ)要注意英美人說(shuō)話(huà)的一些特別方式，絕不要冷落了那些看似并不起眼的語(yǔ)言單位。簡(jiǎn)單的結構若能用得自然貼切，這恰恰就是一個(gè)最不簡(jiǎn)單的本事。我們在看英語(yǔ)原版片時(shí)所聽(tīng)到的一些地道的英文句子往往是說(shuō)話(huà)人恰到好處地運用極其簡(jiǎn)單的詞語(yǔ)就出的。

同樣是"喜歡"這一相同的結果，各自參加考試的原因卻不盡相同：

a) 考大學(xué)未被錄取，便參加自學(xué)考試;

b) 現在，社會(huì )上的各行各業(yè)競爭激烈，獲得一張文憑、學(xué)會(huì )英語(yǔ)能使自己更具競爭力;

c) 外語(yǔ)變得越來(lái)越重要;

d) 對于外語(yǔ)有著(zhù)特別的愛(ài)好;

e) 過(guò)去在學(xué)校里學(xué)外語(yǔ)主要是為了應付考試，現在可以憑興趣選讀一些感興趣的內容;

f) 自己覺(jué)得外語(yǔ)水平不夠用，通過(guò)自學(xué)考試可以系統地學(xué)習英語(yǔ);

g) 社會(huì )需要既懂專(zhuān)業(yè)、又懂外語(yǔ)的復合型人才，故在業(yè)余時(shí)間里補習英語(yǔ);

筆者發(fā)現考生中有兩種值得注意的現象：一種是"流利"有余，內容表達不夠到位，更談不上到點(diǎn)。這是語(yǔ)言學(xué)習過(guò)程中的自由主義傾向，必須加以糾正。另一種是亦步亦趨，不敢越雷池一步，仿佛在做口譯，缺乏基本的口語(yǔ)特點(diǎn)。其實(shí)，上述的觀(guān)點(diǎn)完全可以在意義不走樣的前提下，用比較自由的形式表達出來(lái)：

a) Since I was unable to enroll in a university, this program was my only choice.

b) I find that in today's competitive job market, better English skills enhance my chance of advancing in my career.

c) It is increasingly important for me to have strong English skills for living and working in Shanghai.

d) Learning English has always appealed to me.

e) Since I am now freed from the pressure of exams, I can study English to become a better speaker and for its practical application: I no linger have to study simply simply for exams.

f) I have realized that my English is not accomplished enough for my work and, this program provides a structured project through which I can improve my skills.

g) I feel it's important for our society to have many people who are experts in their fields, and are also bilingual; by studying English, I can contribute to the society.

h) Language is one of the few subjects that can be learned without any elaborate facilities. Only a few books and perhaps some tapes are necessary. I enjoy studying new subjects, and English as a language is interesting to learn and convenient to study.

接下來(lái)我們來(lái)看一看連續表達。

觀(guān)點(diǎn)之一：

Three years ago, I failed to gain entry to university by just a few points. My only option, as a result, was to enroll in the self - taught program. I understood that it would be much more difficult to study and learn without a teacher and the structure of classes; but I think it's a good way for me to gain discipline and strengthen my willpower. I know that many great leaders, throughout the history, have not attended university. While I would never say that they became great because they didn't have a degree, I think it is evident that much can be attained by those who follow a different path other than the expected one. I hope to achieve success myself, even though I may be taking a slightly less direct route than I had originally anticipated.

開(kāi)頭的第一句:

Three years ago, I failed to gain entry to university by just a few points.

說(shuō)的是該考生高考落榜。這個(gè)意思也可以這樣說(shuō)：

也可以分兩句說(shuō)：

下面兩句雖然用的是challenging和difficult,但表示的意思仍然相同：

然而，在表達這個(gè)意思時(shí)，有些考生舍近求遠，愛(ài)用一些大詞，如：uneven, zigzagging, 或復合詞up - and - down 等，如：

從"交流"的角度來(lái)看，上述句子不會(huì )給聽(tīng)者帶來(lái)任何理解上的問(wèn)題，但聽(tīng)來(lái)總覺(jué)得有點(diǎn)怪、一種搭配上的不協(xié)調------盡管語(yǔ)法結構無(wú)可挑剔。據筆者觀(guān)察，學(xué)習口語(yǔ)者中做類(lèi)似這樣的"發(fā)明創(chuàng )造"的并不罕見(jiàn)。作者在這里希望大家在學(xué)習的過(guò)程中要多讀、并留意和積累地道的英語(yǔ)表現手段，力戒任何隨意的組合。換言之，假設在表達某一個(gè)意思時(shí)，語(yǔ)法上通得過(guò)的可能性盡管很多，但其中只有英美人會(huì )用的那一種或幾種形式才是真正的英文?？谡Z(yǔ)學(xué)習者應對這一點(diǎn)引起特別的重視。

觀(guān)點(diǎn)之二：

I enjoy the English self - taught program because it's very convenient for me. I have studied English for many years, and I'm familiar with the vocabulary and basic rules of grammar, as well as the way that I can learn the language best. This is the most efficient way for me to keep up my English studies. Since I am now working full time, it's much easier for me to take a course and to schedule my own study time as I can. On the other hand, it would be very difficult for me to make it to classes or to follow assignments, because sometimes I'm busy at work or sometimes I have more free time. Well, for me, the advantage of the self - taught program is that I can determine my own level. I find that my level of proficiency in English tends to fall between the higher classes and the less advanced classes, and so it's difficult for me to find one that is at the appropriate level. I either end up in a class where I know much of the material already, or I am in a class where it's slightly more advanced than I am. And yet if I can sit down on my own, I can determine my own level and work and progress at a speed suitable for me. It's also much more efficient for me to be able to sit down with all of my materials and assemble all my questions and then pose them at one time, rather than learning a little bit here and there. So I prefer to have the chance to meet with the teacher and find out all the answers I need, and then go back and study them.

I find that the self - taught program allows me to keep up with the development of society that I see. I feel like at this point in our progress, each person has to contribute as much as possible to both their work and to society at large. And for me, the way to do that is to society English, keep advancing, and better my spoken English and my conversational understanding, so that I have something to give the society and my employs. Given that I'm very busy, self - teaching becomes the only practical way for me to continue that.
