集束炸彈是將小型炸彈集合成一般的空用炸彈的形態(tài)，每個(gè)小型炸彈稱(chēng)為子炸彈，因此又稱(chēng)子母炸彈。具體是指在與一般炸彈同樣大小的彈體中，裝入由數個(gè)到數百個(gè)的子炸彈，子炸彈每顆約網(wǎng)球般大小的球體。

由飛行器空投之后，在空中分解，借由散布子炸彈到廣泛的地面造成區域性殺傷。利用其數量的特性增加涵蓋面積和殺傷范圍，可用于攻擊集群坦克,裝甲戰斗車(chē)輛、部隊集結地等集群目標，或機場(chǎng)跑道等大面積目標，具有較強的毀傷能力。
