American dream, first expressed by James Truslow Adams in 1931,”life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or ancievement”regardless of social class or circumstances of birth (Library of congress, American memory,” what is the American dream?”). The idea of the American Dream is rooted in the second sentence of the United States Declaration of Independence which states that "all men are created equal" and that they are "endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights" including "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness."

I admit that American dream makes Americans lead more comfortable, luxury and richer life. The American Dream has a long history and it can be traced back to colonial time. It develops with the development of American society. The history of American dream is also the history of American films which can reflect it. Different works at different periods of time reflect different themes of the American Dream. We can see it from these films we have seen. Let’s say, the technology of making film constantly develops. The Sherlock Jr is silent film. We can see the changement from silent movies to talking film from the film singing in the rain. The picture, dress and props are better and better. In a word, it makes people have a better life.

However, it indulges the society. In the little Caesar, the hooligans pursued money, power and status. He was desperate to be the leader of gangdom. In the graduate, the hero had sex with an old woman whose age was close to her mother. And the strippers were common in America. In the wrestler, the audience cheered for seeing the cruel performance. People seek stimulation and are desperate to do whatever they want to do. And sometimes they are a little abnormal.

The most unbearable result is that American dream accelerates human perishment. Koyaanisqatsi is one of the best movies ever made and the first documentary film that made me cry. The cinematic theme of this sequence is the speed of modern life. The sequence begins with shots of buildings and a shot of a sunset reflected in the glass of a skyscraper. The sequence uses time-lapse photography of the activity of modern life, taking events typically shot at normal speed and accelerating them. The events captured in this sequence involve people interacting with modern technology. The first shots are traffic patterns as seen from skyscrapers at night. This is followed by the film's iconic shot of the moon passing behind a skyscraper. The next shots are closer shots of cars on a highway. The sun rises over the city and we see people hurrying to work. The film shows at regular speed the operation of machines packaging Oscar Mayer bologna. A shot of hot dogs being sent down rows of conveyers is followed by a shot of people moving up escalators. The frenetic speed and pace of the cuts and background music do not slow as shots of modern leisure are shown. People eat, play, shop and work at the same speed. The sequence begins to come full circle as the manufacturing of automobiles in an assembly line factory is shown. Then it shows the movement of cars, shopping carts, Twinkies, and televisions on an assembly line, and elevators moving from first person perspective.
