中文譯名“形而上學(xué)”是根據《易經(jīng)·系辭》中“形而上者謂之道，形而下者謂之器”一語(yǔ)，由日本明治時(shí)期著(zhù)名哲學(xué)家井上哲次郎翻譯。

晚清學(xué)者嚴復則采用了玄學(xué)這一翻譯，后經(jīng)清末留日學(xué)生將大批日制漢語(yǔ)（日本稱(chēng)和制漢語(yǔ)）帶回國后，玄學(xué)這一譯法漸漸被形而上學(xué)取代。嚴復拒絕使用井上哲次郎的翻譯，根據老子《道德經(jīng)》\"玄之又玄，眾妙之門(mén)\"，把“metaphysical”一詞譯為玄學(xué)，但由于日本翻譯的一些詞匯雖然不甚貼切，卻往往更為簡(jiǎn)單易懂，更容易被當時(shí)受教育程度普遍較低的中國民眾所接受，因此“形而上學(xué)”一詞扎根在了漢語(yǔ)之中。
